Live outside Florida but need a background check for a Florida license?

If you're applying for a license or job for any of the Florida Agencies that require fingerprinting and you do not currently reside in Florida, you may be required to mail a physical FD-258 fingerprint card to be processed in the state of Florida. Fingerprinting Jacksonville is approved to process these hard card submissions quickly and correctly. These are commonly required for:

  • Nursing or medical licenses in other states

  • Real Estate Agents

  • Construction Licenses

  • Auto Dealers

  • Department of Elderly Affairs

  • and many other professionals not mentioned

How We Help:

  • We give you step by step instructions on what to do next

  • We will scan and process your fingerprints to the appropriate agencies and provide you with a TCN

  • We will update you on the status if requested

How It Works (for Out-of-State Applicants Needing a Florida Background Check)

1)  Know What Your Agency Requires

Before getting started, take a few minutes to understand what Florida—and specifically the agency or licensing board you're applying with—requires. Most will accept standard FD-258 fingerprint cards, but always double-check. You’ll also need the correct ORI number, which tells the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) where to send your results. If you're not sure which ORI to use, contact the agency or employer who is requesting the background check.

2)  Get Fingerprinted Locally

Visit a local fingerprinting provider or law enforcement agency near you that can roll ink fingerprints on FD-258 cards. Bring any instructions provided by the licensing board. If you don’t have fingerprint cards, you can order a set on amazon. Be sure to get two complete sets that comply with FBI Standards—if the FBI rejects a card due to quality issues, we’ll need a backup. Let the technician fill out the card to avoid issues—some fields require specific codes. There are no refunds if they are rejected due to poor quality or information so make sure to get a good set.

3)  Purchase Your Screening from Us

Before mailing your cards, you’ll need to purchase your Hard Card Processing screening from us. This covers everything: scanning, Submission to the agency that requested the background check, and delivery of your TCN (tracking number).

As part of checkout, you’ll digitally sign the FDLE-required consent form—we include it in the process so there's no extra step.

4)  Mail Your Cards to Fingerprinting Jacksonville

Once you have your prints, mail both completed FD-258 cards to:

Fingerprinting Jacksonville
13475 Atlantic Blvd Unit 8-C101
Jacksonville, FL 32225

Include the two sets of fingerprint cards and signed forms. We recommend using a sturdy mailer to protect the cards from damage during transit and making a signature required.

We will not process cards that are sent to us without an order number. You must place your order before sending the cards.

5)  We Scan and Submit Your Prints

Once we receive your cards and payment, we’ll scan the prints into our approved hard card processing system and submit them directly to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE). You’ll receive a Transaction Control Number (TCN) by email confirming that your background check was submitted.

6)  Background Check Processing

FDLE typically processes background checks within 3–5 business days after submission. The results are sent directly to the requesting agency listed with the ORI number—you will not receive a copy. If you need to verify status, we can assist using your TCN.

If you want a personal copy of your background check, a separate screening is required.

Hard Card Processing

We scan and submit your completed fingerprint cards to FDLE and email you your TCN.

Includes:

  • Hard card scanning

  • FDLE Level 2 Background Check Processing

Total: $90

Frequently asked questions for people who need out of state fingerprinting

Can I scan and email my fingerprint card for FDLE submission?
No. State law enforcement requires that we scan your original physical fingerprint card using FBI approved equipment. You must mail the physical card to us.

Do I need to include payment with my card?
You will need to pay online before submitting your cards to us. We cannot process them without payment.

How long does it take?
We usually submit your fingerprints to FDLE within one business day of receiving your card and payment. The background check process takes 3-5 days.

Will I get a copy of the results?
No. FDLE sends the results directly to the agency associated with your ORI number — not to you or to us.

Can you help me find the right ORI number?
To an extent yes. You can email us at admin@fingerprintingjacksonville.com and ask. We may have it. Others must be obtained by the agency requesting the fingerprints and background check so its best to check with them.

fd-258-ink-fingerprinting.png

The FD-258 is the standard fingerprint card used by the FBI and most states for background checks. These cards are often referred to as "hard cards" because they are physical, ink-based or digitally printed cards that must be mailed or handed in.

  • Some states have their own versions of the FD-258 card with custom layouts or agency-specific information. It's important to verify which card your agency requires.

  • We provide standard FD-258 fingerprint cards at the time of service.

  • If your agency requires a state-specific version, you'll need to bring that card with you or request it from the agency in advance.
